There is an overwhelming feeling of loneliness in the odds of a massive threat that Prey doesn't manage to invoke - even worse, from time to time I felt like playing a MMO with 15 largely inconsequential side quests in my quest log. It's true that you don't meet NPCs in System Shock 2, but while that fact, at the time of developing, may have been due to a shortage of ressources and time and may not have been a deliberate design choice, it actually improves on the atmosphere by a large margin compared to modern NPC-riddled exploration games. Still, there are some aspects that make me want to fire up System Shock 2 again right now, in the same vein I wanted to fire up System Shock 2 when I was done with Prey, and I'll try to elaborate on them here.įirstly, the atmosphere. ![]() ![]() So, graphics and overall production value can't be aspects to base a comparison on in this case. Having just finished Prey and System Shock 2 within five days I don't feel like the Shock 2 hype is fueled by misguided nostalgia.įirst of all, you have to remember that we compare games that are 18 years apart in terms of release dates, so if Prey is not strictly 'better' a game in 2017 than System Shock 2 is in 2017 there would be some major problems for Prey to be found. ![]()
